Astley v. Verdun

Represented the plaintiff, who was Chair of the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and a Bank of Montreal director, in a defamation case involving successful injunction proceedings, a $650,000 damage award obtained at trial, and contempt proceedings against the defendant shareholder activist who had defamed the plaintiff and subsequently breached a permanent injunction obtained against him. The defendant was found in contempt and the judge ordered 90 days’ house arrest and 18 months’ probation.
