Words, London’s Literary and Creative Art Festival celebrated its 5th Anniversary this past weekend. Lerners LLP and Peter Downs (partner in the health law and personal injury practice groups) have been proud sponsors of this important cultural event since its inception.
Words has consistently grown in popularity over the years and attracts a wide variety of award winning authors and creative artists.
Opening night this year featured well-known former Londoner, Janice Zolf, interviewing Emma Donoghue. Of course, Ms. Donoghue is best known for writing “Room” which was later developed into an academy award nominated film. The conversation between Donoghue and Zolf was both insightful and entertaining. At the conclusion of the interview Ms. Donoghue was presented with the Words Award 2018 and a plaque commemorating her contribution to the literary arts in London (photo below).
The Donoghue interview was followed by a lively panel discussion chaired by Josh Lambier who has spearheaded the Words events for the past five years. Lambier’s panel included Tom Cull (London’s Poet Laureate), Cherie Dimaline (Western’s writer in residence), Lisa Moore (award winning author from Newfoundland) and Jane Urquhart (author of 7 internationally acclaimed novels including the Underpainter, winner of the Governor Generals Award). All of the authors provided thought provoking perspectives on their works enthusiastically received by the audience.
Lerners and Peter Downs, are proud to have sponsored Words consistently since the festival launched in 2014. After all, words are the tools of a lawyer’s trade.
