Learn with Lerners Bursary Program

Terms & Conditions

Lerners LLP (“Lerners”) reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to modify, amend or cancel its Learn with Lerners Bursary & Mentorship Program (the “Bursary”) at any time without notice. Lerners shall have full and sole discretion to decide all questions and issues regarding the awarding of bursaries and the administration of these Terms and Conditions of the Bursary. Applicants shall have no claim against Lerners on any basis including but not limited to the failure to award a Bursary, or Lerners’ evaluation of application submissions.

You are responsible for ensuring the information provided in your Bursary Application is true, accurate and complete. Should you submit inaccurate or incomplete information, your candidacy may be cancelled.

You are responsible for ensuring your Application is submitted to Lerners by no later than 11:59 pm Eastern Standard Time on May 12th, 2024 (the “Application Deadline”).

By submitting your Application, you consent to the collection and use of your personal information, as set out in the Learn with Lerners Bursary and Mentorship Program Privacy Statement.

In 2024, at the full and sole discretion of Lerners, the Bursary shall be awarded to two (2) recipients who meet the criteria for eligibility set out below (the “Recipient”). The selection of the Recipients is final and shall not be subject to review or appeal.

To be eligible for the Bursary, Applicants must:

  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident of Canada, or a Protected Person as determined by the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada (IRB) or by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC);
  • Be a member of Ontario’s racialized community (i.e. Black, Indigenous or a Person of Colour);
  • Be 21 years of age or less at the start of the 2024-2025 academic year;
  • Be currently enrolled in, or have graduated from, a publically funded secondary school in Ontario;
  • Have been offered admission to a first-year program at an Ontario post-secondary college or university of their choice, on a full-time basis, in accordance with the requirements and deadlines of the college or university, during the 2024/25 school year and be enrolled in a course of study with that college or university leading to an undergraduate certificate, diploma or degree (“Approved School”);
  • Be interested in pursuing a career in the legal services industry, including but not limited to becoming a lawyer, law clerk, paralegal, legal assistant, legal marketer, judge, court service staff, alternative dispute resolution facilitator, or legislator;
  • Have submitted their Application via the Learn with Lerners Bursary & Mentorship Program website by the Application Deadline;
  • Accept these Terms and Conditions; and
  • Agree to Lerners Privacy Statement.

The following persons are NOT eligible to receive a Bursary:

  • Bursary applicants (“Applicants”) who provide false information to Lerners at any time; or
  • Applicants who do not meet all of the eligibility criteria.

The Bursary will have a value of $5,000 Canadian dollars which shall be payable to the Recipient after providing to Lerners proof of eligibility, including but not limited to proof of age, enrollment and acceptance at an Approved School.

The Bursary shall be non-renewable.

The Recipient of the Bursary will be contacted directly by Lerners in early June, 2024. Unfortunately, Lerners is unable to contact those Applicants who were not selected for the Bursary, and thanks all Applicants for their submissions in advance.

The Recipient shall complete a release form upon confirmation of acceptance of the Bursary as a condition of receiving the Bursary.

At the full discretion of Lerners, the Recipient shall also be eligible for a period of mentorship of up to 12 months with a lawyer employed by Lerners (the “Mentorship Program”). Lerners shall have full discretion to assign a mentor to the Recipient and will make best efforts to match the Recipient with a mentor in one of Lerners’ offices most convenient to the Recipient’s primary residence and/or post-secondary institution.

The Mentorship Program may take place in person or virtually, or both, at the full discretion of the lawyer assigned to be a mentor to the Recipient. Bursary Recipients may decline to participate in the Mentorship Program at any time, however there shall be no entitlement to cash value in lieu of the Mentorship Program.

As a condition for receiving the Bursary and/or the Mentorship Program, the Recipient shall provide a written consent for Lerners to use the Recipient’s personal information, including name, age, pronouns (if you so choose), likeness, story, photograph, video, quote and/or image for promotional and marketing purposes, both in print and electronic, and for distribution on social media, including but not limited to Lerners’ website, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram and Twitter. Moreover,

  • If the Recipient is under the age of eighteen (18), the written consent shall be signed by both the Recipient and the Recipient’s parent or legal guardian; and
  • The Recipient’s personal information will be used for promotional and marketing purposes and distributed on social media and may be available to be viewed by the public for an indefinite duration.

The Bursary and Mentorship Program may be terminated at any time by Lerners upon the occurrence of any behaviour on the part of the Recipient that Lerners, at its sole discretion, deems inappropriate or in violation of Lerners’ core values, including but not limited to any misconduct at college, university or in the workplace.

The Recipient shall be responsible for informing themselves of the tax consequences of receiving the Bursary and the Recipient shall be responsible for paying any taxes, fees and penalties incurred as a result of receiving the Bursary and hereby warrants that they will not hold Lerners responsible.

By submitting an Application via the Learn with Lerners Bursary and Mentorship Program website Applicants confirm and warrant that they have read these Terms and Conditions and agree to all of them.
